Groundwater markets are a promising tool for demand reduction in basins implementing SGMA, but they are complex, and good design is essential. This article is informed by TNC's work to design, launch, and run the Fox Canyon Groundwater Market in Ventura County - California's first groundwater market under SGMA. The Fox Canyon Groundwater Market is reducing groundwater demand in Ventura County's three groundwater basins and serves as a model to do the same in other basins.
